Innovative technology to optimize healing
Every type of tissue, whether skin, fascia, or organ has its own specialized function and needs. The Ethicon Wound Closure Portfolio lets surgeons match the specific wound healing needs of each tissue type to the appropriate closure device, giving surgeons and patients the right solutions for the right procedures. While there are differences in tissue healing profiles and types of wound closure devices, for optimal patient outcomes, every Ethicon Wound Closure Device:
- Provides strength and support to maintain tissue integrity
- Minimizes risk factors for infection to enhance healing and reduce excess scarring170,171
- Minimizes tissue trauma172
For more than 80 years, Ethicon has provided clinicians with quality tools that they trust to facilitate excellent surgical outcomes and to enhance patients’ lives worldwide.
With significantly more points of fixation than tradition sutures, STRATAFIX™ Knotless Tissue Control Devices provide a combination of consistent control, security, and efficiency.
Plus Antibacterial Sutures are the only commercially available sutures with antibacterial protection.
The products in the DERMABOND® Portfolio are supported by more clinical evidence, outcomes data and publications than any other topical skin adhesive.1

Available in a variety of sizes and lengths, STRATAFIX Knotless Tissue Control Devices address surgeons’ wound closure needs across multiple procedures and surgical specialties.
The DERMABOND Portfolio: Redefining skin closure with adhesives
Secure skin closure is an integral part of nearly every surgical procedure. Ethicon has pioneered advances in skin closure that enable surgeons to minimize tissue trauma, optimize healing and improve patient outcomes.
The healing process is enhanced when a skin closure device:
- Provides the strength to maintain skin edges so that they remain approximated and level
- Distributes tension along the entire incision, adding uniform strength to the incision and preventing skin gaps from forming when the skin is stressed
- Creates a strong, flexible barrier to prevent bacteria from entering the incision until the epidermis has fully healed
To meet these needs, Ethicon offers the DERMABOND® Portfolio, which provides strong, protective, and efficient closure.1,192,193,194 The products in the DERMABOND Portfolio are supported by more clinical evidence, outcomes data, and publications than any other topical skin adhesive1 demonstrating Ethicon’s commitment to advancing surgical care.
DERMABOND ADVANCED® Topical Skin Adhesive features a patented, thicker formula with a unique blend of plasticizers and an initiator for precise control.DERMABOND® Mini Topical Skin Adhesive
DERMABOND® Mini Topical Skin Adhesive offers fast closure and provides a protective barrier that adds strength and inhibits bacteria.DERMABOND PRINEO® Skin Closure System
DERMABOND PRINEO® Skin Closure System is a unique two-part skin closure system with topical skin adhesion for strength and microbial protection, and flexible, self-adhesive mesh for excellent approximation and healing.
Addressing a risk factor for surgical site infection through suture technology
The Ethicon Suture Portfolio offers surgeons solutions to enhance wound healing and improve patient outcomes by addressing a risk factor associated with surgical site infections (SSIs).
SSIs account for 37% of all hospital-acquired infections in surgical patients.178 Changing demographics, including rising rates of obesity and diabetes, are increasing patients’ risk for SSIs.179,180,181 In addition to doubling the risk of patient mortality, SSIs can increase treatment costs by up to $40,000 per patient and can increase fivefold the likelihood a patient is readmitted to the hospital.178,182,183,184
Wound closure provides an opportunity to address the controllable risks of SSIs, including bacterial colonization of the suture and entry of bacteria into the wound after surgery.179,185
Synthetic Absorbable Sutures
Plus Antibacterial Sutures
Plus Antibacterial Sutures are the only commercially available sutures with antibacterial protection. A range of Plus Sutures are available for skin and fascial tissue repair.
MONOCRYL® Plus Antibacterial (poliglecaprone 25) Suture is ideal for subcuticular skin closures.172
PDS® Plus Antibacterial (polydioxanone) Suture is specifically designed for secure fascial closure in multiple patient types.172
Coated VICRYL® Plus Antibacterial (polyglactin 910) Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, except for ophthalmic, cardiovascular and neurological tissue.172
MONOCRYL® (poliglecaprone 25) Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, but not for use in cardiovascular or neurological tissues, microsurgery or ophthalmic surgery.172
PDS® II (polydioxanone) Suture is indicated for use in soft tissue approximation, including use in pediatric cardiovascular tissue where growth is expected to occur and in ophthalmic surgery. It is not indicated for adult cardiovascular tissue, microsurgery and neural tissue.172
Coated VICRYL® (polyglactin 910) Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures, but not for use in cardiovascular and neurological tissues.172
VICRYL RAPIDE™ (polyglactin 910) Suture is a synthetic absorbable suture with performance characteristics of a collagen (surgical gut) suture. It is indicated only for use in superficial soft tissue approximation of the skin and mucosa.172
