Wound Closure

Ethicon is committed to helping prevent wound complications, such as surgical site infection, wound dehiscence and incisional hernia in Colorectal surgeries.

Science and technology

Suture as a site for infection

Foreign materials such as sutures lower the number of bacteria required to cause an infection.179 When implanted, sutures are rapidly coated with tissue protein, which creates sites for bacterial colonization.185,190 This colonization can lead to biofilm formation185 and biofilm formation increases the difficulty of treating an infection.190

Wound healing timeline

Each layer has different wound healing process

Epithelization is not the completion of healing, as each layer has a different wound healing timeline and process. For fascia and muscle (mesodermal origin), granulation tissue is formed, and repair is achieved with fibrosis. It takes time to achieve strength.522,523

Plus Antibacterial Sutures

Sutures designed for secure closure in each tissue layer

PDS™ Plus Antibacterial (polydioxanone) Suture is specifically designed to provide secure closure in high-tension tissues, such as fascia, for 6 weeks. MONOCRYL® Plus Antibacterial Sutures are designed for deep dermal and subcuticular skin closure because they have a high initial breaking strength to maintain wound approximation.155, ‡

Portfolio for wound closure needs

Delivering more consistency,* more security*, and more efficiency*

STRATAFIX™ Knotless Tissue Control Devices provide more strength and security compared to interrupted suturing, without knot related complications.487 They deliver more consistent tension control and approximation during closure484,* and are more efficient than continuous suturing.484

DERMABOND ADVANCED Adhesive

Less infection, better cosmesis and higher patient satisfaction

When used with sutures, DERMABOND ADVANCED Adhesive was shown to add 75% more strength to wound closure than sutures alone.1 It provides a microbial barrier for at least 72 hours against organisms responsible for SSIs.117,192 It showed in vitro inhibition of gram-positive bacteria (MRSA & MRSE) and gram-negative bacteria (E. coli).
