Parotidectomy

ParotidectomyWhen performing a parotidectomy, the precise and gentle handling of delicate tissues and effective hemostasis help to achieve an optimal outcome.

HARMONIC FOCUS Curved Shears

Our HARMONIC FOCUS® Curved Shears device uses a precise ultrasonic vibrating blade that both coagulates and cuts, so you can dissect and spot coagulate with a single instrument. Because these shears deliver directed ultrasonic energy instead of electricity, there's minimal lateral thermal spread and desiccation of tissue – as well as no electricity passing into or through the patient's body.  Also, in superficial parotidectomies, they have been shown to reduce duration of drainage and incidence of transient facial nerve weakness.* These devices may be used to:

  • Transect soft tissue
  • Expose parotid and related structures
  • Create hemostasis
  • Reduce serous drainage*

Depending on your preference, we offer:

  • The HARMONIC FOCUS Curved Shears for efficient and precise dissecting, cutting and coagulation of tissue and vessels up to 5mm (as well as lymphatics). Additionally, with fewer instrument exchanges, the multifunctional curved tip may save time versus the traditional clamp, cut and tie technique for the ligation of vessels.
  • HARMONIC® Blades cut, dissect and coagulate vessels up to 2mm with significantly less heat than electrosurgery for less tissue and nerve injury.

Additionally, our wound closure devices provide you with the strength and protection you need.

STRATAFIX

STRATAFIX™ Knotless Tissue Control Devices – a unique anchoring technology to maintain closure without knots:

  • More consistent tension control and approximation with each pass than with traditional sutures
  • Strength and security of interrupted suturing without knot-related complications1,122,123,133,141,145,150,153
  • More efficient than continuous suturing with traditional sutures1,122,123,133,141,145,150,153
DERMABOND Advanced

DERMABOND ADVANCED™ Topical Skin Adhesive – a unique formulation that provides patients with a triad of benefits when used in addition to sutures

  • Adds strength ex vivo1

  • * In a retrospective review, 44 patients underwent parotidectomy with HARMONIC and 41 patients underwent conventional cold knife parotidectomy (control group). Use of the HARMONIC in superficial parotidectomy (n=35) was associated with significant reductions in intraoperative blood loss (38.0 mL ± 4.23 mL vs 68.0 mL ± 12.0 mL, P<0.05), as well as the duration of drainage (31.8 h ± 2.4 h vs 39.29 h ± 2.21 h, P<0.05) when compared with controls (n=37). In patients undergoing total parotidectomy, no significant differences were observed between the HARMONIC (n=9) and control groups (n=4) in length of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative drainage, duration of drainage, and facial nerve injury.17
  • Based on pre-clinical testing of lymphatic vessels up to and including 1 mm in diameter.1
  • In a comparative tissue cutting study using chicken breast, the HARMONIC Combination Hooked Blade (HK105) cut at a lower tissue temperature (average temperature of 128 F or 53.3 C) compared with the monopolar electrosurgery pencil (average temperature of 230 F or 110 C). The difference was significant (p < .001).1
  • § Clinical significance is unknown
  • Effective in vitro against S. epidermidis, S. aureus, E. coli, Enterococcus faecium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa
