Ventral Hernia Repair

Ventral Hernia RepairWhile approximately 289,000 ventral hernia repairs are performed in the U.S. every year, a high incidence of morbidity and recurrence has been associated with an open approach to the procedure.20

Using a minimally invasive approach to ventral hernia repair, average recurrence rates have been shown to drop to 4.7% compared to 12% to 52% for open surgery.*  In one study, perioperative complication rates for laparoscopic ventral hernia repair were 14% compared to 27% for open ventral hernia repair and hospital stay was 2.0 days for laparoscopic ventral hernia repair and 4.0 days for the open ventral hernia repair.

Patients who underwent a laparoscopic approach for ventral hernia repair healed faster, used a post-operative average of 27mg of morphine versus 58.9mg for open-surgery patients, and returned to daily activities 21.6 days sooner.19,20

Currently 39% of ventral hernia repairs are performed as minimally invasive procedures but by 2014, 60% are expected to use minimally invasive approaches.15,21

The HARMONIC ACE® Curved Shears use ultrasonic energy to cut, and coagulate with precision. This multi-functional and uniquely versatile instrument may be used for:

  • Grasping and blunt dissection.
  • Precise dissection around the omentum and mesentery.
  • Coagulating and cutting small vessels in the omentum and mesentery – up to 5 mm in diameter.
  • Reducing tissue damage with minimal lateral thermal spread when compared to electrocautery.

  • * Average follow-up period for lap VHR patients (N= 744) was 20 months and hernia recurrence was 4.7%. Long-term recurrence rates for open VHR cited by the author ranged from 12% to 52%.14
  • Average length of stay was 2.0 days for lap VHR patients (N= 322). Average length of stay was 4.0 days for open VHR patients (N=390).13
